KUWAIT, Jan 14 (KUNA) -- Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) announced on Wednesday cooperation with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) to establish an advanced Scientific Fabrication Laboratory (SciFabLab) at The Scientific Center, one of KFAS' affiliates, as a leading platform for interactive knowledge dissemination and hands-on scientific learning.
In a press statement, KFAS said the project aims to support innovation and science and technology education by creating an integrated creative environment for future generations. It seeks to expand the concept of "learning by doing" and enhance the scientific and technical skills of young people.
KFAS noted that its cooperation with ICTP dates back to 1981 and has traditionally focused on supporting researchers and academics. The partnership is now expanding to include community-oriented initiatives, coinciding with The Scientific Center's comprehensive expansion plan implemented in 2025 to attract youth and stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The statement said that, in preparation for the laboratory's launch scheduled for spring 2026, a team of eight specialists from The Scientific Center completed intensive training at ICTP's SciFabLab in Trieste, Italy. The training program covered digital laboratory operations, the design of interactive scientific activities and the use of modern fabrication technologies, including 3D printing, laser cutting and robotics programming.
KFAS added that the cooperation also involved defining the technical specifications and equipment requirements to be provided by ICTP to ensure the laboratory meets international standards. Plans include organizing a major science event in Kuwait inspired by the global Maker Faire festival to promote local innovation.
KFAS stressed that the project aligns with its strategy to build a scientifically capable Kuwaiti generation prepared for future challenges and to strengthen a knowledge-based economy, reflecting its continued commitment to nurturing talent and encouraging scientific curiosity that leads to innovation.
