CAIRO, Dec 30 (KUNA) -- The Arab League condemned on Tuesday the Israeli Knesset's approval of an act cutting electricity and water supplies to the offices of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
The step is part of the ongoing targeting committed by the Israeli occupation against the UNRWA over the past years, said a statement issued by the League's sector of Palestine and occupied territories.
It added that the law is the continuation of all illegal legislations made by the Knesset on obstructing the UNRWA's mission at the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs)
In addition, the move is a flagrant violation of the UN organizations' immunities and privileges, and a blatant challenge to the UN General Assembly's resolutions regarding the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion on the occupation's obligations toward the UN, international organizations and other states in the OPTs including Jerusalem.
The law, which directly came into effect, will lead to disastrous repercussions and undermine the UNRWA's ability to achieve its mission to provide basic services to Palestinian refugees in the OPTs, it noted.
These services are indispensable in the Gaza Strip due to their key role in the rebuilding process, it pointed out.
The League called on the international community - all its agencies and institutions - to assume its legal and moral responsibility and confront Israeli occupation practices and resolutions that target the UNRWA.
The League also called for taking punitive procedures against the Israeli occupation to compel it to rescind these laws and abide by international law and international legitimacy's resolutions, the statement concluded. (end)
