BRUSSELS, Dec 23 (KUNA) -- The European Union announced on Tuesday the launch of a package of practical measures to support the plastic recycling sector, as part of efforts to strengthen the competitiveness of European industry and address growing pressures stemming from high energy costs and competition from China and other Asian countries.
In a press release, the European Commission said the measures aim to accelerate the transition toward a circular economy, with a particular focus on the plastics sector, contributing to support for the EU Single Market and enhancing economic security and environmental sustainability.
The Commission pointed out that the package includes short-term measures to tackle the most urgent challenges facing the sector, to be followed later by broader legislation under the anticipated Circular Economy Act in 2026.
It highlighted that among the most important steps is the introduction of EU-wide standards to determine when recycled plastics are considered suitable for re-use, a move that will reduce market fragmentation, facilitate the movement of recycled materials within the bloc, and simplify administrative procedures for companies, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises.
The measures also include updating rules on the recycled content of single-use plastic beverage bottles, creating new opportunities for chemical recycling and supporting the achievement of EU targets in this field.
As part of efforts to ensure fair competition, the Commission announced the introduction of separate customs codes for virgin and recycled plastics, alongside enhanced monitoring of European and global markets, in preparation for potential trade measures if necessary.
The Commission affirmed that these steps will help enhance the competitiveness of the European plastics sector, support investment and innovation, and advance emissions reductions and circular economy objectives. (end) arn.ibi
