BRUSSELS, Dec 11 (KUNA) -- Eurozone finance ministers on Thursday elected Greek Minister of Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis as President of the Eurogroup.
Pierrakakis will assume office on 12 December 2025 for a two and a half year term, with the first Eurogroup meeting under his presidency scheduled for 19 January 2026. He is set to remain in his post until mid-2028.
European congratulations followed the announcement of his election. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a post on X "Congratulations on your election as President of the Eurogroup." "We will also work closely together on the international role of the euro and the Savings and Investment Union, to strengthen our competitiveness," she noted.
Meanwhile, EU Council President Antonio Costa wrote on his X account, "Greece has come such a long way in the past 10 years." "Your election today as President of the Eurogroup is a meaningful recognition of that progress, both for your country and for our Union," he added.
In a similar X post European Parliament President Roberta Metsola congratulated the new Eurogroup chief, saying, "This result is a testament to Greece's remarkable economic comeback and growth." She added that the EU Parliament will remain "a strong partner as we work to strengthen Europe's economy and enhance its competitiveness." The Eurogroup is an informal body in which finance ministers of euro area countries discuss common matters related to sharing the single currency.
Its main task is to ensure close coordination of economic policies among euro area member states and promote conditions for stronger economic growth, in addition to preparing Euro Summit meetings and following up on their outcomes.
