WASHINGTON, Dec 11 (KUNA) -- The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that more than 2.5 million undocumented immigrants have been removed from the United States since President Donald Trump assumed office last year.
In a press statement on Wednesday, the department noted that its law-enforcement operations have deported over 605,000 undocumented immigrants, while an additional 1.9 million left the country voluntarily since January 20 of last year.
The statement also encouraged undocumented immigrants still residing in the US to use the department's designated application, which offers free air travel back to their home countries along with a US 1000 financial stipend.
Since taking office, President Trump has launched a nationwide campaign targeting the removal of undocumented immigrants, implemented through Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) across the country.
The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced late November the suspension of all asylum application approvals, part of a series of accelerated immigration measures introduced following an armed attack allegedly carried out by an Afghan migrant in Washington. (end) amm.dss
