BRUSSELS, Dec 8 (KUNA) -- The European Commission announced on Monday that the US tech giant Meta has committed to providing an alternative option for users of Facebook and Instagram in the European Union, allowing them to see less personalised advertising, in compliance with the Digital Markets Act.
The Commission explained in a statement that this is the first time such an option has been made available on Metaآ’s social networks.
It added that Meta will give users the effective choice between consenting to share all their data and seeing fully personalised advertising, or opting to share less data for an experience with less personalised ads.
Meta is scheduled to offer these new options to EU users starting in January 2026.
This commitment follows close dialogue between the Commission and the US company after the Commission found Meta in breach of the Digital Markets Act and issued a non-compliance decision related to user choice in April 2025.
The Commission noted that once this option is implemented, it will seek feedback and evidence from Meta and other relevant stakeholders on the impact and uptake of the new ad model, stressing that users in the EU must have a full and effective choice, which is their right under the Digital Markets Act.
