ALGIERS, Nov 27 (KUNA) -- Guinea-Bissau's General Horta Nta Na Man has been sworn in as the high military command and the country's transitional president for one year in the aftermath of a military coup that deposed outgoing president Umaro Sissoco Embalo.
Following a swearing-in ceremony at the military's headquarters amid tight security measures, the general was quoted by local reports as saying, "I have just been sworn in to lead the high command."
General Horta Nta Na Man vowed that he would seek to promote security in the country, as the armed forces announced that all the country's borders would be reopened.
Some army officers announced on Wednesday they had deposed the country's president, staging the West African nation's latest military coup.
They had arrested Guinea-Bissau's outgoing president Umaro Sissoco Embalo at the Presidential Palace and seized power in the country.
The move came on the eve of the expected announcement of results from a hotly contested presidential election in Guinea-Bissau.
Several high-ranking army officers and Minister of Interior Botche Candأ© were also reportedly arrested.
The electoral commission was due on Thursday to announce provisional results from Sunday's election on Thursday, in which Embalo and top challenger Fernando Dias were key rivals.
Both sides had claimed victory in the first round of voting.
Located between Senegal and Guinea, Guinea-Bissau witnessed at least nine military coups during the period between 1974 and 2020. (end)
