WASHINGTON, Nov 27 (KUNA) - The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed the identity of the shooter in the attack on National Guard personnel near the White House in Washington, D.C., an Afghan immigrant who entered the United States in 2021.
DHS said in a press release late Wednesday that the suspect who shot two National Guardsmen is Rahmanullah Lakamal, an Afghan national who was one of the many unvetted, mass paroled into the United States under Operation Allies Welcome on September 8, 2021, under the Biden Administration.
The statement added "The Operation Allies Welcome program let in thousands of unvetted Afghan nationals including terrorists into our country", noting it will keep the public apprised as more information becomes available.
US security authorities said that an investigation is underway into the shooting of two National Guard members near the White House, noting that motive for attack remains unclear.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that President Donald Trump has requested additional National Guard reinforcements in Washington, D.C., as a precaution following the attack.
Earlier today, President Trump said the shooter-who critically injured the two Guardsmen-is himself severely wounded, adding that he "will pay a heavy price" for his actions.
Two National Guard soldiers were shot and critically wounded on Wednesday in downtown Washington near the White House in what officials described as a targeted ambush, and the suspect was in custody after suffering gunshot wounds during the incident.
National Guard troops have been deployed across Washington for months as part of President Trump's anti-crime campaign, which has since expanded to other US cities. (end)
