IRBIL, Nov 27 (KUNA) -- A drone attack targeted the Kormor gas field in Iraq's Kurdistan Region, causing widespread electricity outages across most areas, according to the Kurdistan Regional Government, which confirmed the incident occurred during the late evening hours last night.
The Kurdistan Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity announced a complete halt in gas supply to power stations following the attack, which caused a total blackout on the national grid due to total dependency on gas production.
Officials stated that nearly eighty percent of Kurdistan's electricity is generated using gas from Kormor, meaning the disruption severely affected Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and surrounding cities as power stations immediately stopped functioning due to lost fuel supply.
Iraq's Security Media Cell described the incident as a treacherous terrorist attack, reporting the burning of a main storage tank without any human casualties while warning of serious threats to national energy security and economic stability.
Authorities confirmed they are coordinating with Dana Gas to restore operations, vowing strict legal action against those responsible and emphasizing that this attack damaged vital infrastructure and harmed national energy resources and regional stability significantly.
Kormor gas field, Iraq's largest, holds 8.2 trillion cubic feet, spans 135 square kilometers in Sulaymaniyah, operated since 2003 by KRG and Dana Gas, producing gas for power plants supplying 67 percent regional electricity daily. (end) sbr.ahm
