By Salman Al-Mutairi KUWAIT, Nov 25 (KUNA) -- The Kuwaiti Union of Charitable Societies and Foundations (KCSU) held a special session on Tuesday, in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), with the participation of a representative from the Ministry of Social Affairs and several heads of Kuwaiti charitable societies, foundations, and private sector institutions.
The meeting discussed the urgent humanitarian needs of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and refugees and internally displaced people in Sudan, as well as ways to strengthen coordination among Kuwaiti charitable organizations in support of international efforts to address displacement crises.
The President of the KCSU, Dr. Saad Al-Otaibi, told KUNA that the session comes at a very critical time due to the scale of challenges facing communities affected by displacement in Sudan and Bangladesh.
Al-Otaibi added that the Union serves as a central coordination platform for more than 70 registered charitable and endowment institutions, helping unify efforts and direct resources toward the most impactful interventions.
He noted that the crisis in Sudan is among the largest current humanitarian emergencies, while Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh continue to face harsh living conditions requiring sustained support in areas of shelter, education, healthcare.
For her part, UNHCR representative in Kuwait, Nisreen Rubaian, expressed in a statement to KUNA her appreciation for the pioneering role played by Kuwaiti charitable societies and foundations, affirming that Kuwait has long been a symbol of compassion and leadership in humanitarian efforts.
Rubaian stated that partnerships with Kuwaiti charitable institutions, including the UNHCR's cooperation with the KCSU, are essential to providing life-saving assistance to more than 117 million forcibly displaced people across the world amid growing humanitarian needs.
Meanwhile, the representative of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Acting Director of the Department of Charitable Societies and Foundations, Abdulmohsen Al-Mekhayyal, told KUNA that the ministry supports any initiative by charitable entities to serve those in need inside or outside Kuwait.
The Chairman of the Board of Tanmia Charity, Dr. Nasser Al-Ajmi, told KUNA that today's session reinforces efforts to enhance the response to rising needs in refugee and displacement areas.
Al-Ajmi explained that Tanmia Charity has a five-year history of cooperation with UNHCR, through which Kuwaiti assistance has reached more than 1.1 million refugees in the Cox's Bazar camps in Bangladesh, as confirmed by the UNHCR representative. He added that the organization recently concluded a field mission to Chad, which included several health, shelter, and food programs to support Sudanese internally displaced persons there.(end) slm.onm
