NEW YORK, Nov 20 (KUNA) -- Deputy Special Envoy for Syria at the United Nations Najat Rachdi, warned of the continued Israeli occupation military operations and incursions into Syrian territory.
This came in a briefing to the UN Security Council on Wednesday to discuss the situation in Syria.
Rachdi said that these continued military operations and intrusions endanger civilians, inflame regional tensions, undermine the fragile security environment, and threaten the political transition.
She described the political transition in Syria as facing very significant challenges, including dealing with the past, rebuilding the economy, and strengthening social cohesion.
Tensions, lawlessness and some violence persist in several areas in Syria, with sporadic exchanges of fire between forces on frontlines, added Rachdi.
She explained that security fragility is a reminder that lasting peace in Syria depends on comprehensive security sector reform and credible programs of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration.
Rachdi called for progress on accountability, transitional justice and missing persons, noting that the first trial for crimes committed during recent violence in the coastal region (March) is currently underway.
On a proposed roadmap for Sweida, Rachdi encouraged all parties to take tangible steps forward - especially on initial trust-building measures regarding detainees and restoring state services.
She reaffirmed the importance of a successful political transition, expressing hope for deeper engagement from all parties to support a stable, sovereign, united and prosperous Syria. (end)
