VIENNA, Nov 19 (KUNA) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said on Wednesday that the US-Saudi nuclear agreement was still in its initial phase, affirming that the IAEA will start discussing technical aspects of the deal concerning nuclear fuel and guarantees.
Speaking to the press, Grossi revealed that he had contacted the two sides and asserted that commitment to guarantees was important at this stage.
Saudi Arabia had taken considerable steps in bolstering its nuclear monitoring system after forgoing its Small Quantities Protocol (SQP) earlier this year, which previously hindered IAEA checks, he said.
Grossi added that thus far, the agreement points to activities linked to the fuel cycle, requiring checks from the agency.
There is still time to discuss technical details before constructing facilities on the ground, he affirmed.
Regarding Non-Proliferation, Grossi pointed out that it was an essential component and that the IAEA will keep a close eye on the proceedings in line with international regulations.
Whether the deal was in line with the US 123 Agreement on the peaceful cooperation, Grossi said that he did not receive any official statement in this regard. (end) amg.gta
