CAIRO, Nov 11 (KUNA) -- Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmad Abulgheit affirmed on Tuesday that consolidating the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip requires continued pressure on Israeli occupation forces to lift the arbitrary restrictions imposed on the entry of humanitarian aid.
In a statement, the League said this came during Abul-Gheit's meeting with UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Ramiz Alakbarov, and UN Assistant Secretary-General and Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States, Abdullah Al-Dardari, to discuss developments in the Gaza Strip and ongoing UN efforts to address the worsening humanitarian crisis.
Abulgheit listened during the meeting to the UN officials' assessments of the humanitarian situation in Gaza since the ceasefire on October 10, particularly given the continued obstacles imposed by the Israeli occupation, which restrict the entry of essential goods into Gaza under the pretext of classifying them as "dual-use." The Secretary-General stressed the need to lift the restrictions and allow the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, especially since large quantities of essential supplies remain stockpiled at the crossings.
He stressed the need for any Security Council resolution to be based on the agreed-upon international terms of reference for the peace process and to reflect the unity of a Palestinian State encompassing the West Bank and Gaza Strip. (end) mm.fs.res
