LONDON, Nov 9 (KUNA) -- Dame Susan Langley took office on Sunday as the 697th Lord Mayor of London, becoming the first ever woman to carry the title of Lady Mayor after being assigned to the post for a one-year term.
In an ancient procession that dates back to the 13th century, the new Lord Mayor of London traveled to the Royal Courts of Justice in Westminster to take her oath of allegiance, surrounded by throngs of crowds and marching bands.
For a one-year term, the Lord Mayor of London works as an international ambassador for Britain's financial and professional services sector, establishing a close rapport with the Mayor of London.
The Gulf Arab region has often been the first destination for a newly-elected Lord Mayor of London's first trip abroad, as Dame Susan's predecessor, Alastair King, was received by His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah when he visited Kuwait shortly after taking office last year.
