CAIRO, Nov 2 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary-General Ahmad Abul-Gheit on Sunday underlined Britain's central role in advancing peace efforts in the region, urging full implementation of the Gaza ceasefire, particularly unimpeded humanitarian aid entry and reconstruction.
This came during Abulgheit's meeting with UK Minister for the Middle East and North Africa Hamish Falconer, to discuss regional issues of mutual concern, the Arab League said in a statement.
The statement added that the meeting reviewed developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, especially Gaza, amid international efforts to sustain the ceasefire and move toward the next phase of the "20-point plan" for Gaza.
Abul-Gheit stressed the importance of unifying Palestinian institutions and strengthening national partnership in preparation for a political phase ensuring the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The statement quoted the British minister affirming his country's keenness to enhance cooperation with Arab states in various fields, emphasizing joint coordination to address regional challenges.
The two sides also discussed developments in Sudan, stressing the need for a comprehensive ceasefire, facilitation of humanitarian aid access, and preservation of Sudan's unity and stability. (end) mm.aai
