BRUSSELS, Oct 23 (KUNA) -- The European Parliament on Thursday adopted new legislation aimed at reducing pollution caused by small plastic particles known as "nurdles" -- tiny pellets that form the basic material for most plastic products, from car bumpers to salad bowls.
The new rules require transport and manufacturing companies to take full responsibility for any spills or leakage of these particles during handling or transport, as part of efforts to reduce plastic pollution and protect marine and terrestrial ecosystems in Europe.
The European Parliament also announced its priorities for the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), scheduled to be held next month in Belem, Brazil, calling on the international community to renew its commitment to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
In a statement, MEPs stressed the importance of the European Union continuing to pursue ambitious climate policy goals, while emphasizing that all EU member states must take responsibility for financing efforts to combat climate change, addressing debt crises in countries most vulnerable to climate impacts, and simplifying access to climate finance for developing nations.
The resolution also reiterated the call for the EU to end its reliance on fossil fuels, gradually phase out subsidies for the sector, and accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources, while urging the international community to pay greater attention to the climate impacts of armed conflicts.
