BRUSSELS, Oct 23 (KUNA) -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday praised the new US sanctions imposed on Russia's energy sector, describing them as a "strong and much needed message" that supports continued pressure on Moscow.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the EU summit in Brussels, Zelensky said, "We waited for this. God bless it will work and this is very important," adding that Washington "has sent a good signal to other countries in the world to join the sanctions." The Ukrainian President said in a post on X before attending the EU summit in Brussels that the new US sanctions against Russia's oil giants send a clear signal that prolonging the war and spreading terror come at a cost, stressing that this is a fair and well-deserved step.
He added that the only effective path to peace is through sustained pressure on Russia, with sanctions as a key tool, expressing gratitude to US President Donald Trump and his team for their decisive action and reaffirming that a just and lasting peace has no alternative.
It is worth noting that US President Donald Trump on Wednesday imposed sanctions on Russia's two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, complaining that his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the Ukraine war "don't go anywhere." (end) arn.ahm
