IRBIL, Oct 21 (KUNA) -- President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq Nechirvan Barzani on Tuesday affirmed the importance of the presence of the international coalition in Iraq and the Region to confront the threats and dangers of terrorism.
The Kurdistan Region Presidency said in a statement that this came during a meeting between the President of the Region and an Iraqi military delegation comprising senior Iraqi military and security officers, headed by Iraqi Army Chief of Staff, General Abdulamir Yarallah.
It added that the meeting, was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga and a number of officials from the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs.
It discussed joint cooperation between the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga, relations with the international coalition, and Iraq's military and security ties with the United States within the framework of the bilateral security agreement, as well as the dangers of terrorism and the situation in Syria.
Both sides agreed that the so-called Islamic State still poses a real threat to the security and stability of Iraq and Syria.
In this context, Barzani stressed that Iraq and the Kurdistan Region continue to need the assistance and support of the international coalition in confronting terrorism threats, within the framework of Iraq's security agreements.
He also emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation between the Peshmerga and the Iraqi army.
For his part, the Iraqi Army Chief of Staff affirmed that current cooperation between the army and the Peshmerga is at its best, and praised in this regard the role of the Peshmerga Chief of Staff.
The meeting also addressed border security, the status of border crossings, especially those along the Iraq-Syria border, and the conclusion of the international coalition's mission in Iraq in September of next year. (end)
