TOKYO -- Takaichi became the country's 104th Prime Minister on Tuesday after Parliament announced her election.
Takaichi, 64, is set to formally launch a new Cabinet after an attestation ceremony at the Imperial Palace later in the day.
At her first press conference as LDP chief on October 4, Takaichi stressed that she will focus our efforts on tackling rising prices.
She also vowed to reinforce the Japan-US alliance, including trilateral cooperation with the US and other partners, such as South Korea, Australia, and the Philippines, and to take a greater role in promoting a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.
Born in the western Japanese prefecture of Nara in 1961, Takaichi is known for her hawkish views on diplomacy and national security. After graduating from Kobe University, she entered the Matsushita Institute of Government and Management, and then worked as a TV anchor. She was first elected to the Lower House in 1993 and joined the LDP in 1996.
She entered the Cabinet for the first time in 2006 as Minister of State for Okinawa and Northern Territories Affairs under the late Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. She then served as Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications in 2014. (end)
