NEW YORK, Oct 16 (KUNA) -- Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Tariq Al-Bannai, expressed on Thursday the readiness of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states to constructively contribute to formulating a collective consensus that would lead to a realistic and balanced outcome to enhance effectiveness of the UN system.
Al-Bannai's remarks came in a speech he delivered - on behalf of the Gulf Group - before the UN General Assembly session to discuss the "UN80" initiative.
He stressed that real reform requires an objective review that enhances institutional integration and maintains balance among the pillars of the UN system.
The "UN80" initiative is a real opportunity to strengthen the system's bodies and improve their performance to ensure they are fit for their intended purposes, in addition to achieving a qualitative shift in the efficiency and effectiveness of the UN system, he noted.
Al-Bannai also called for directing efforts toward the shared goal of promoting multilateralism with full respect for the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. He emphasized the need to adopt a pragmatic approach to prioritize qualitative progress in the upcoming process, and to examine the priorities of developing countries while avoiding marginalizing them or reducing their geographical representation within the UN system.
