CAIRO, Oct 16 (KUNA) -- An official of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday commended Kuwait's role in supporting medical research, considering its prize for control of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes as a shining example of spurring scientific research.
Speaking to KUNA, Director of WHO's Program Management for the Eastern Mediterranean Region Dr. Adham Rashad voiced appreciation to Kuwait for its pioneering role in backing medical research, hailing the prize for stimulating scientific and medical research at both regional and international levels.
The WHO official was in Cairo to partake in the 72nd session of the WHO's Eastern Mediterranean Region.
He said that the continuation of this initiative reflects Kuwait's humanitarian and scientific commitment to buttressing efforts aiming at improving public health and bolstering scholars' capabilities of addressing chronic health challenges.
He added that the Kuwaiti prize, which was launched in 2003, is annually given to the best research in the field of controlling cancer and cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.
Over 12 years, the prize has contributed to enriching the Arab and international medical research scene by highlighting distinguished works and encouraging cooperation between scientific and medical institutions.
Rashad added that this initiative marks an exemplary partnership between national instructions and international organizations due to relevant positive influence in developing medical sciences and improving life quality.
Kuwaiti Minister of Health Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi delivered the Kuwaiti prize for control of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes to Dr. Noor Al-Busaidi of Oman and Dr. Majid Mobarhan of Iran during a ceremony held on the sidelines of the WHO's 72nd session. (end) mm.mt
