JEDDAH, Oct 10 (KUNA) --The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to protecting and advancing the rights, dignity and potentials of girls across the Muslim world.
In a press release marking the International Day of the Girl, which falls on October 11, OIC said that girls bear a disproportionate burden in times of conflict, climate shocks, displacement and social instability.
It noted that girls continue to move forward as resilient leaders, advocates for justice, and drivers of positive change within their families and communities.
Through its action plan, the organization indicated the implementation of a comprehensive framework to enhance access to education, health, economic opportunities, and social integration, in full accordance with Islamic values and international standards.
It added that the Jeddah Document on Women's Rights in Islam, adopted by the International Conference on Women's Rights in Islam held in Jeddah in November 2023, promotes justice and equality between women and men in member states.
The OIC expressed deep concern about the plight of girls living in conflict and occupation, calling on the international community to intensify efforts to protect and empower girls in these and other crises and to ensure their access to education, health, and security as essential pillars of peace and development.
The organization urged all Member States, their specialized institutions, international partners, and the global community to make the voices of girls around the world heard, invest in their leadership, and empower them to shape a more equitable and prosperous future.
In 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, in recognition of girls' rights and the unique challenges they face around the world. (end) fn.nhq
