RAMALLAH, Oct 9 (KUNA) -- President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday welcomed US President Donald Trump's announcement of an agreement to end the war on Gaza, ensure withdrawal, allow humanitarian aid, and exchange prisoners.
In remarks published by the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA), President Abbas expressed hope the agreement would lead to a permanent political solution ending Israeli occupation and establishing a Palestinian state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem.
He praised President Trump's efforts and those of all mediators involved in reaching the agreement, affirming Palestine's readiness to work with concerned parties to achieve peace and stability based on international legitimacy.
President Abbas stressed the need for immediate implementation, including release of all hostages and prisoners, urgent humanitarian aid entry through UN agencies, preventing displacement or annexation, and launching comprehensive reconstruction efforts in the Gaza Strip.
He reaffirmed that sovereignty over Gaza belongs to the State of Palestine, emphasizing unity with the West Bank under Palestinian law, national institutions, a unified security force, and with coordinated Arab and international support.
Earlier today, parties announced agreement on the first phase of the US President's plan, presented at the UN General Assembly, beginning with detainee release, withdrawal to agreed borders, and entry of 400 aid trucks daily.
On October 7, 2023, Israeli occupation forces launched a war on Gaza through bombardment, siege, and starvation, resulting in the martyrdom of over 67,000 Palestinians and injury of approximately 170,000 others, according to official sources. (end) nq.aai
