WASHINGTON, Oct 1 (KUNA) -- The US military is to reduce its mission in Iraq and transition to a permanent US-Iraqi partnership between the two countries, said the US Department of Defence (Pentagon) on Wednesday.
In a statement, the Pentagon affirmed that in accordance with the President's guidance and in alignment with the US-Iraq Higher Military Commission and the joint statement issued on Sept. 27, 2024, the US and Coalition partners will reduce their military mission in Iraq.
"This reduction reflects our combined success in fighting ISIS and marks an effort to transition to a lasting US-Iraq security partnership in accordance with US national interests, the Iraqi Constitution, and the US-Iraq Strategic Framework Agreement," the statement added.
US forces in Iraq operate under the umbrella of the Global Coalition to Defeat the so-called Islamic State (ISIS), a broad global coalition formed in September 2014 that includes approximately 89 partner countries and international organizations. (end)
