KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 (KUNA) -- An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck Sumenep in Indonesia on Tuesday, injuring three people, and the authorities confirmed that the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami threat, as the country's National Disaster Management Agency reported on Wednesday.
The agency said the tremor damaged 30 houses, four places of worship, and one health facility. Power outages were reported in some areas but were later restored. Emergency teams continue to monitor the situation and collect data.
Officials urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, advising them to verify information through official sources and to check the safety of their homes before resuming normal activities.
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the earthquake's epicenter was located under the sea, about 50 kilometers southeast of Sumenep, at a depth of 11 kilometers. It added that residents in parts of the neighboring Bali Province felt mild to moderate shaking.
Indonesia sits along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a seismically active zone where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently, leaving the country highly vulnerable to such natural disasters. (end) aab.dss
