KUWAIT, Sept 18 (KUNA) -- Kuwaiti researcher at the Environment Public Authority Omar Al-Shaheen, recorded a four-year-old female Greater Flamingo at Jahra Nature Reserve.
Al-Shaheen told KUNA on Thursday that during his observation, he noticed a leg ring on the flamingo, contacted specialized organizations in France, confirmed its ringing in Camargue, southern France, August 2021.
He explained that the flamingo appears in Kuwait's tidal mudflats along Shuwaikh and Sulaibikhat beaches as well as Jahra Reserve, emphasizing that its presence confirms Kuwait's strategic importance as a key migratory corridor for many European birds.
He added that the bird has a pink color, measuring about 130 centimeters in height with a wingspan of 155 centimeters, feeding mainly on algae and microorganisms that give it its pink pigmentation.
Al-Shaheen stated that flamingos are known for their social behavior, gathering in large flocks, which helps protect them from natural predators while also making the process of food searching significantly more efficient. (end)
