GENEVA, Sept 16 (KUNA) -- The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) strongly condemned on Tuesday air strikes carried out by the Israeli occupation on the Qatari capital Doha, slamming the incident as a grave violation of international laws and principles.
Precisely a week after the Israeli occupation launched air strikes on Doha, Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) and international organizations Nasser Al-Hain, speaking on behalf of the six-member bloc, told an emergency UN Security Council session that the event represents a dangerous escalation of violence.
The session in Geneva, which comes at the behest of Kuwait and Pakistan, on behalf of the GCC and Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), respectively, is transpiring at a perilous juncture in the wake of the Israeli occupation's air strikes on Qatar, in spite of Doha's role as a "mediator" aiming to resolve the Middle East conflict, he said.
The protection of civilians and respect of international laws are tantamount to a "collective responsibility" incumbent upon the international community, added the Kuwaiti diplomat, saying that any infringement on national sovereignties and efforts to foment fear are sternly rejected.
He went on urge the international community to take the necessary steps and measures in a bid to ensure the protection of nations that assume "mediator roles," subsequently protecting global peace and security, he emphasized. (end) amk.nam
