BRUSSELS, Sept 16 (KUNA) -- Luxembourg's Prime Minister Luc Frieden said Tuesday his country will join a group of states that will recognize the State of Palestine at next weekآ’s UN summit in New York.
Speaking to journalists, Frieden said that "the situation on the ground has deteriorated considerably in recent months."
"A movement is now emerging in Europe and around the world to demonstrate that the two-state solution is still relevant," he said.
"The Luxembourg government intends to join those who recognize the State of Palestine at next week's conference on the two-state solution," Frieden added.
Several European Union countries, including France and Belgium, had earlier announced their intention to recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming UN General Assembly meeting.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced last week that the European Union would adopt a stricter stance towards the Israeli occupation over the war in Gaza by suspending bilateral payments and imposing sanctions on what she described as "extremist ministers" and violent settlers.
