KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (KUNA) -- One person was killed in Jakarta when he was run over by a police tactical vehicle during worker and student protests near the parliament building late Thursday.
The protests were driven by demands to raise wages, end outsourcing, revise a controversial 2020 job creation law, and reduce taxes, in addition to economic conditions, alleged corruption and growing military influence in politics.
In a statement, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed shock and sadness, calling the police actions "excessive".
He promised that the government would support the victim's family and urged the public to stay calm and trust the authorities.
For his part, the national police chief Listyo Prabowo publicly apologized to the victim's family, and Jakarta's police chief Asep Suheri promised full accountability. (end)
