WASHINGTON, Aug 5 (KUNA) -- Brazil's Supreme Court ruled late Monday that former President Jair Bolsonaro to be placed under house arrest, marking a new chapter in his ongoing trial over allegations of conspiring to overturn the 2022 presidential election results, which he lost.
According to CNN, Justice Alexandre de Moraes stated that Bolsonaro recorded speeches to be posted on third-party social media accounts in which his ankle monitor is visible, which Moraes said defied an order prohibiting "exploitation of interviews or public or private speeches posted on third parties' social media."
Bolsonaro's eldest son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, insisted his father has never defied a court order, he told CNN, "We are officially in a dictatorship. This is a sad page in the history of Brazil."
Under the court order, Bolsonaro will serve his house arrest at home and will only be allowed to receive visits from his legal team and individuals authorized by the court, and CNN reported that he is prohibited from using a mobile phone either directly or through intermediaries.
The case has also stirred tensions with the United States, particularly amid the opposition of former US President Donald Trump to the proceedings.
In a message sent last month to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Trump said that he has known and worked with former President Jair Bolsonaro and held him in great respect, as did many other leaders.
Trump added that the way Brazil has treated former President Bolsonaro is an international disgrace and that the trial should not be happening and must end immediately. (end)
