ALGIERS, July 27 (KUNA) -- The Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) strongly condemned Sunday the Israeli occupation decision to support what it called "sovereignty" over the occupied West Bank and Jordan Valley, as a blatant violation of international law and a clear disregard for relevant international resolutions.
In a statement signed by Union President Ibrahim Boughali, the AIPU said that even the mere announcement of such intentions constitutes a grave breach of international law and a dismissal of legitimate international resolutions, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2334.
That resolution demands an immediate and complete halt to all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, to prevent changes to the region's demographic and geographic makeup.
The Union firmly rejected any form of imposed Israeli sovereignty over Palestinian land, categorizing such actions as illegal and illegitimate, and warned that these violations by the occupation pose a serious threat to regional stability and significantly undermine the chances of implementing a two-state solution.
Reaffirming its position, the Union called on the international community to fulfill their legal and moral responsibilities by expanding solidarity with the Palestinian cause, and urged immediate international action to compel the Israeli occupation to halt its aggression on the Gaza Strip, stop escalating violence in the occupied West Bank, and ensure protection for the Palestinian people while supporting their legitimate right to establish an independent state.
