KUALA LAMPUR, July 17 (KUNA) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Thursday condemned Israeli ocupation airstrikes on the Syrian capital, Damascus.
In a statement, Ibrahim said the strikes came after years of suffering by the Syrian people, stressing that Syria "deserves peace, not more bloodshed or foreign interference." "These strikes constitute a clear violation of international law and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Israel and Syria," He affirmed that Malaysia stands with the Syrian people and calls for an immediate halt to these violations and a commitment to humanitarian principles and the rule of law.
He emphasized that Malaysia will not stop at condemnation but will continue to support any international efforts to halt the aggression and protect innocent civilians in Syria.
Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs had announced on Wednesday the postponement of the planned visit by Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Al-Shebani to Malaysia, originally scheduled for July 16-17, due to "unforeseen circumstances."
