DOHA, May 27 (KUNA) -- The international conference "Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights: Opportunities, Risks, and Visions for a Better Future" kicked off Tuesday in Doha, Qatar.
Addressing the event, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Council (NHRC), Maryam Al-Attiyah emphasized the crucial importance of AI and the need for a deeper understanding of it for the future, as well as acknowledging its increasing impact on human rights through the possibilities and opportunities it provides.
She added that the conference ensures the integration of human rights in all measures related to emerging technologies, foremost of which is AI.
She pointed out that the conference is an important platform for knowledge, exchanging views, and dialogue as it features participation from regional and international institutions.
For his part, Qatar's Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohammad Al-Mannai said during his speech that the world is witnessing a pivotal moment in its relationship with technology, as AI has become a driving force that reshapes features of life.
In a related context, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk emphasized in a speech the importance of using AI efficiently, in order to avoid misleading information, which could exacerbate the effects of inequality and injustice in society.
He highlighted the fact that many countries do not have the capacity to invest in AI, as it reminds in the hands who produce it, which poses a danger to human life, dignity, and rights. (end)
