KUWAIT, May 22 (KUNA) -- Kuwait's Environment Public Authority said Thursday that protecting biological diversity is a shared moral and humanitarian responsibility, requiring concerted efforts for a prosperous present and a sustainable future.
This statement by the authority's Acting Director-General, Nouf Bahbahani, came during her speech on celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity, which falls on May 22 of each year, with the participation of Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) and the International Union for Conservation Nature (IUCN).
Behbahani explained that this year's celebration would focus on raising community awareness of the importance of biodiversity, updating national biodiversity strategies, and implementing the obligations stipulated in international agreements related to environmental conservation.
For his part, Acting Director of the Health, Safety, and Environment Group at KOTC, Mohammad Mirza, representing the company's Acting CEO, Sheikh Khaled Ahmad Al-Malik Al-Sabah, emphasized the company's commitment in supporting environmental conservation and sustainable initiatives.
Mirza explained that the company comply with environmental standards and requirements, as well as international and global laws in the maritime field,
He pointed to the implementation of a ballast water treatment system and reducing harmful emissions, which would reflect the company's full commitment to Kuwait's vision to achieve carbon neutrality and reduce emissions.
In her speech, Dr. Wijdan Al-Oqab, Chairwoman of the National Committee for IUCN and President of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society (KEPS), said that Kuwait has ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity and prepared its national reports, reflecting its global commitment to preserving biodiversity.
Al-Aqab pointed to the efforts of the authority as an executive and regulatory body that implements environmental laws and requirements.
She also noted the efforts of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, which has provided scientific research and studies, alongside the efforts of civil society organizations and their diverse messages to increase environmental awareness.
She highlighted the pioneering role of KEPS in raising environmental awareness through its Arab-accredited environmental documentary series. (end)
