BRUSSELS, May 21 (KUNA) -- European Council President Antonio Costa said that the European Union's recent decision to lift economic sanctions on Syria represents "a real opportunity" for the country's recovery and reconstruction, emphasizing the importance of seizing this moment to build a constructive future partnership.
Costa made the remarks on Wednesday following a phone call with Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa. Both men met for the first time in Cairo in last March.
During the call, Costa reiterated the EU's readiness to support Syria's path toward stability and reform. He also welcomed President al-Sharaa's commitment to a democratic transition and his vision of rebuilding Syria as a stable economy, open to investment, particularly in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
According to Costa, President Al-Sharaa expressed appreciation for what he described as a "historic decision" by the EU, and conveyed interest in launching a high-level dialogue between Damascus and Brussels in the near future. (end) arn.gb
