NEW YORK, April 8 (KUNA) -- Commander UNIFIL Lieut General Aroldo Lazaro affirmed that a ceasefire between Lebanon and the Israeli occupation must go through a political path that addresses issues of sovereignty and regional safety.
Briefing a meeting for the UNSC on UN Peacekeeping operations (HOMC) late Monday, Lazaro indicated that the strategic context and balance of power had largely shifted with the road for a permanent ceasefire might be slowly achieved on the long term.
Internal political operations within Lebanon to handle the military capabilities of Hezbollah and armed non-government must be made, he said, adding that since the last ceasefire on November 27, 2024 each party of the agreement interprets the agreement as well as UNSC 1701 resolution especially the parts concerning halting hostile activities.
The Israeli occupation must cease and withdraw and recognized the political sensitivities in Lebanon, he added.
He indicated that the US and French intervention succeeded in reducing hostile activities, but the process remained fragile.
This UNSC meeting came at a time were military components of military peacekeeping mission at the UN will be holding their annual meeting this week. (end)
