BRUSSELS, March 9 (KUNA) -- The European Commission announced on Sunday that it will adopt an "ambitious" legal proposal next Tuesday aimed at tightening deportation and return procedures within the European Union.
Announcing the move at a press conference on the 100th day of her second term, EC President Ursula von der Leyen said the "returns are a key element of the pact on migration and asylum."
Von der Leyen explained that the Commission will propose common rules for returns, in addition to a new European Return Order and mutual recognition of return decisions by Member States.
"We want to establish a true European system for returns by proposing regulations with simpler and clearer rules to prevent absconding and facilitate the return of third-country nationals with no right to stay," she affirmed, adding that an entry ban will be issued for those who are returned.
The European Union will be "stricter where there are security risks," stating that the Union's authorities will be "firm," while "respecting our obligations under international law and fundamental human rights," Von der Leyen stressed. (end)
