KUWAIT, Dec 1 (KUNA) -- Morocco defeated Canada 2-1 in a Group F fixture of the World Cup and headed to the Round of 16 for the first time since 1986.
The game, hosted at Al-Thumama Stadium on Thursday afternoon, saw Hakim Ziyech scoring the opener for the Lions of Atlas as early as in minute 4 before Youssef En-Nesyri doubled their lead in minute 23 and put the team atop of the group.
Morocco's center back Nayef Aguerd mistakenly diverted the ball into his own net, securing Canada's sole goal.
Meanwhile, another Group F showdown between Croatia and Belgium ended in a goalless draw, which raised Croatia's tally to five points in the second spot of the group rankings behind the Moroccans who have seven points.
In the Round of 16, the Lions are set to face the second winners of Group E while Croatia will face the frontrunners of the same group. (end) sad.gb
