GENEVA, June 26 (KUNA) -- World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus said that monkeypox is an evolving health threat.
Ghebreyesus said in a press release late Saturday that since early May, 3,000 cases have been detected across 50 countries which do not normally see monkeypox cases.
He added that "I am deeply concerned about the monkeypox outbreak, this is clearly an evolving health threat that my colleagues and I and the WHO Secretariat are following extremely closely".
He also noted that monkeypox has been circulating in a number of African countries for decades and has been neglected in terms of research, attention and funding.
Ghebreyesus urged all member states to exchange collective attention and coordinated action to stop the further spread of monkeypox virus using public health measures. (end) ta.ahm
