BRUSSELS, May 20 (KUNA) -- A seven-member delegation of the European Parliamentآ’s Subcommittee on Security and Defence will travel to Iraq from 23 to 26 May.
They will assess the work of the EU Advisory Mission in Iraq , given the regional security concerns and the changing geopolitical realities following the withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan and Russiaآ’s war against Ukraine, said an European Parliament press release today.
MEPs will travel to the capital Baghdad and to Erbil, in the Kurdistan region. They will meet with Government and Parliamentary representatives among others.
Discussions will include the challenges that Iraq is facing following the territorial defeat of Daesh, such as ongoing humanitarian crisis, the need for stabilisation, early recovery, overall reforms and reconciliation.
"Through this visit, the European Parliament wants to express its solidarity with all the peoples of Iraq and to underline its support during this period of deadlock and efforts toward democratic transition," it said.
Meanwhile, a five-member delegation from the European Parliamentآ’s Subcommittee on Human Rights, will travel to Tunisia from 22 to 24 May.
The visit takes place in the context of the privileged relations between the EU and Tunisia, noted a separate EP press release.
They will hold a series of exchanges with various Tunisian stakeholders, in order to deepen their understanding of the latest political developments and current trends in the country ahead of the announced referendum on a constitutional reform planned for July 25, it added. (end) nk
