WASHINGTON, March 8 (KUNA) -- The US designated on Monday the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Katibat Al-Tawhid wal Jihad, based in Syria, as a global terrorist group, the State Department said on Monday.
The move comes after the group was added to the United Nations Security Council sanctions list, requiring all UN member states to impose an assets freeze, travel ban and an arms embargo on its members.
The group "operates primarily in Idlib Province, Syria alongside Hayآ’at Tahrir al-Sham and cooperates with other designated terrorist groups such as Katibat al-Imam al-Bukhari and Islamic Jihad Group," spokesperson Ned Price said in a statement.
Alongside its activities in Syria, the group is responsible for global attacks, including the 2017 metro bombing in Saint Petersburg, Russia, which killed 14 people and injured 50 others, and the 2016 suicide car bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, which wounded another three.
