NEW YORK, Oct 21 (KUNA) -- Members of UN Security Council called for immediate ceasefire in Yemen according to resolution (2565) of the year 2021, and for resolving differences through comprehensive dialogue while also rejecting the use of violence for political reasons.
In a statement Wednesday night, the council welcomed Saudi Arabia's announcement of March 22, which was supported by the Yemeni government, in which Riyadh offered a new peace initiative to end the war in Yemen, which would include a nationwide ceasefire under UN supervision and the reopening of air and sea ports.
The council stressed importance of putting a stop to escalation by all sides and denounced the recruitment of child-soldiers and sexual violence in the conflict.
Members of the Security Council also strongly condemned human rights violations, stressing the necessity of accountability and avoiding all that could endanger civilians' lives.
The council expressed support for UN special envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg and renewed expectations of sides involved in the conflict meeting with the envoy under UN supervision, with good intentions and no conditions.
They also denounced Houthi border-crossing attacks, and highlighted 8th of October attack targeting King Abdullah airport as well as the drone attacks that targeted Abha airport.
The Security Council also condemned increasing number of attacks on Yemeni coasts, endangering civilian and commercial ships, and posing imminent danger on maritime security for ships in Gulf of Adan and the Red Sea.
Members of the council reaffirmed strong commitment to ensuring unity, independence and safety of Yemeni lands, and called on member states and other active sides to commit to the weapon ban.
Furthermore, the council condemned infringements on international human rights law in regards to delivering humanitarian aid and protecting lives of civilians, including those working in humanitarian and medical fields, and the amenities they work in.
The Security Council renewed commitment to finding a political solution with Yemeni leadership, as well as full equal participation of women and youth according to Security Council resolutions. (end) asf.aai
