NEW DELHI, Oct 20 (KUNA) -- Nepalese authorities said on Wednesday that at least 48 people were killed and 31 others were missing due to massive floods and landslides caused by incessant rains as India reported death toll going up to 81.
The Indo Asian News Agency reported quoting Nepal's Home Ministry that the torrential rains that have hit 11 districts in the Himalayan country have resulted in the killing of 48 people while 31 others are still missing.
Nepalese Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba called an emergency meeting today to discuss the situation arising out of the incessant rains. The torrential outpour has led to collapse of several bridges, and destroyed houses, buildings and roads. The domestic flights services have also been suspended, local reports said. India and Nepal are witnessing massive devastations due to torrential rains. Death toll in India stood at 81 in current floods and landslides. North Indian state of Uttarakhand reported that the death toll has gone up to 46 people while southern Indian state of Kerala battered by incessant rains reported 35 deaths. The Indian Meteorological Department warned that the rains would continue in both the states for few more days prompting the authorities to issue warning to the people.
Several thousands have been evacuated in Uttarakhand and Kerala and people have been asked to remain prepared for any eventuality due to torrential rains in the coming days. (end) atk.aa
