TOKYO, May 7 (KUNA) - Japan reported 6,194 new cases over the last 24 hours, raising the nation's total number to 624,681, the health ministry and local authorities said Friday.
The country's cumulative death toll rose by 90 to 10,641.
Tokyo added 907 new infections, topping 900 for the first time in six days, which brought the total cases in the Japanese capital to 144,441. The tallies exclude those who were linked to a virus-hit cruise ship in February 2020.
To contain the virus resurgence, the government panel of experts on Friday approved the government's plan to extend a state of emergency over the COVID-19 for Tokyo and three other prefectures by two weeks until May 31. (end) mk.aa
