BRUSSELS, Aug 31 (KUNA) -- The European Union Monday reiterated its condemnation all forms of manifestations of racism, xenophobia and related intolerance.
The EU reaction came following the public burning of the Quran in Sweden last week.
"They are incompatible to the values on which the European Union was founded," Christian Wigand, an EU spokesperson on rule of law and justice, told an online news conference in Brussels today.
He said the EU has legal instruments in place combating racism and xenophobia which obliges EU member states to penalise public incitement to violence and hatred related to race, culture and religion.
Regarding the specific case in Denmark, Wigand noted that there is an investigation at the national level ongoing.
"So I wouldn't be able to comment on an ongoing investigation. This is a matter for national authorities under the control of independent court," he added.
According to media reports, some Danish right wing extremists burnt the Quran in the southern city of Malmo last Friday. (end) nk.sd
