GENEVA, April 8 (KUNA) -- World Health Organization's Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned world leaders Wednesday against politicizing coronavirus.
"This politicization will cause more deaths," Ghebreyesus told a news conference in Geneva, and called on importance of solidarity of the international community to help countries with weak health systems to enable them confront the virus.
He said the virus succeeded in spreading all over the world in 50 days, and could cause severe political, social and economic uncertainties.
Figures coming from China were showing a decline in infections, he said, but these numbers should be assessed very carefully because it was very early to post predictions about the spread of the virus.
An international team of experts, led by WHO, is in China now to find answers for some questions "we don't know about the virus and infections," including severity and transmission of disease, and effectiveness of the Chinese measures to limit the spread.
Ghebreyesus said WHO was joining hands with specialized companies to address shortage in gloves and sterilized outfits.
He said 40 African countries, and 29 nations in the Americas would get end of this week necessary equipment to help them detect the virus. (end) ta.bs
