NEW DELHI, Feb 26 (KUNA) -- Death toll following the ongoing communal violence in the Indian capital over the amended citizenship law rose on Wednesday to 20 people while more than 150 others sustained injuries.
The Press Trust of India said quoting Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital authorities that the death toll touched 20 as seven more injured people were dead on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said after an emergency meeting today that the situation is under control and adequate forces have been deployed in the affected areas.
Shah appealed to the political parties to exercise restraint and help tackle the situation by desisting from spreading rumors, hate speech and inflammatory comments and dispel fear among the public.
The home minister also underlined the need of activating local peace committees with representatives of all sections of society.
Meanwhile students from various central universities including Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Delhi University encircled the house of Kejriwal demanding immediate action to stop the violence and punish the culprits.
Seelampur, Chand Bagh, Bhajanpura, Gokulpuri, Maujpur, Bhajanpura, Khajuri Khas, Ghonda and Jafrabad, with predominant Muslim presence, are some of the worst affected areas in the capital. (end) atk.gta
