ALGIERS, Jan 24 (KUNA) -- A 4.8 degree earthquake rattled eastern Algerian district of El Aouana situated in the province of Jijel, the Algerian Seismological Center reported on Friday.
The quake happened at 8:30 a.m. (local time) today, with its epicenter pin pointed five kilometers northeast of the town of El Aouana, populated by some 15,000 people..
Many residents of Jijel, some 240 kilometers from the capital Algiers, ventured out of their houses when the earthquake occurred. Others in nearby provinces also felt the tremors.
There were no reports about damage or casualties. (end) mr.rk
