MANAMA, Dec 8 (KUNA) -- King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa congratulated the national team on winning the 24th Arabian Gulf Cup in Qatar for the first time in the history of Bahrain.
He extended deepest thanks to all the national team players for clinching the much-coveted trophy, hailing their impressive performance throughout the championship, according to Bahrain News Agency (BNA).
He said the achievement reflects Bahrain's football standing in the Gulf, regional continental and international arenas, expressing the hope that the achievement would serve as a catalyst for players to look forward to more trophies in the future.
The King appreciated the dedicated efforts made by Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, National Security Advisor and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, to motivate the players.
He also commended the efforts of the Bahrain Football Association, chaired by Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa.
He thanked the Bahrainis and residents who supported the national team during the championship and encouraged the players to win the historic title.
He reiterated keenness on supporting the youth and sports movement and develop all sports in the Kingdom of Bahrain The King decreed that tomorrow, Monday, will be a day off to mark this historic achievement, according to the BNA report.
Earlier tonight, Bahrain won their first ever Arabian Gulf Cup title, edging Saudi Arabia 1-0 at Qatar's Khalifa International Stadium. (end) hmd.gb
