NEW DELHI, Nov 10 (KUNA) -- At least seven people were killed on Sunday as cyclone 'Bulbul' hit coastal districts of West Bengal before turning towards Bangladesh, official sources from India said.
The sources were quoted by the Press Trust of India as saying that at least seven people were killed in different parts of the state due to the severe cyclonic storm which brought heavy rain accompanied with gale wind.
The Bulbul uprooted hundreds of trees and electricity posts in Kolkata and adjoining regions bring life to a near-halt.
Most of the deaths were due to falling trees or walls. Several teams of National Disaster Response Team and the local police and local authorities are busy engaged in relief and rescue operations and cleaning the roads and restoring public services.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and promised to extend all possible support to face the cyclone.
Meanwhile, media reports stated that at least six people were killed in the neighboring Bangladesh as the cyclone made a land fall in the country. (end) atk.mt
